Why Some Strategy Games Feel Great on Touchscreens and Others Don't

A strategy game can be brilliant on paper and miserable on a phone if the controls fight your thumbs. After playing dozens of them, I've noticed the good ones share a few traits worth looking for before you commit.

The first is generous tap targets. If units and buttons are too small, you'll mis-tap under pressure and blame yourself for a loss that was really the interface. The best games make selection forgiving and let you drag to reposition instead of demanding pixel-perfect precision.

The second is a sensible camera. Pinch to zoom should be smooth and the game should keep the important stuff on screen during tense moments. Nothing kills a strategy session faster than losing sight of your base while fighting the camera.

Finally, look for undo or confirm steps on costly actions. On a small screen, accidents happen, and a game that forgives a fat-fingered move respects that you're playing on a bus, not at a desk.
