Upgrade or Expand? The Question Every Strategy Game Keeps Asking

Every strategy and tower defence game eventually forces the same choice: pour resources into what you have or build something new. Getting this right, again and again, is most of what separates a comfortable win from a nail-biter.

My rule of thumb is to upgrade when your positions are already good but underpowered, and expand when you have gaps in coverage or a new threat you can't answer. Upgrades multiply what works; expansion fixes what's missing.

There's also a tempo angle. Late in a level, upgrades usually win because you don't have time to bring new units up to speed. Early on, a smart expansion can set up a stronger board for everything that follows.

Whenever I'm stuck, I ask one question: is my current setup failing because it's too weak or because it doesn't cover something? The answer almost always points me the right way.
